Jump Start

New Year’s resolutions fit into three categories:

1. Diet

2.  Exercise

3. Other crap

How come no one ever makes a resolution to be nicer to sales clerks or slow down to let people merge onto the highway?

I guess that’s just not as interesting.

Its obviously much more fun to freak out about all the holiday indulgences and then swear off fat, sugar, and relaxing on the couch.

Except that sets you up for failure.

And it’s stupid.

So how do you make a fitness resolution you can keep?

It’s all about knowing how to set goals.

Nothing I am about to say is new.

But it is logical.

So jump on it.

1. Set a goal:


Isn’t that what a resolution is?


Got a goal in mind?


Example: I want to exercise for 45 minutes a day, 6 days a week. 

2.  Make your goal attainable so that you are successful:

It’s unreasonable to expect yourself to go from marathon sessions of The Voice to marathon sweat sessions.

Example: I will exercise at least three days a week.

3. Get specific:

I get distracted easily.

It helps if I have a specific plan.

Example: I will walk the dogs for at least 20 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. 

4. Make it non-negotiable:

If you wait until you feel like exercising, well, you never will. I’m pretty sure exercising doesn’t become fun for at least three months. Think of all the other things you do out of obligation like cleaning the house, paying bills, and working. If you can do those things, you can get yourself through a workout a few times a week. The good news is that it gets more fun!

Example: I hate walking. It’s boring. 

Change your thought: Even though walking is boring sometimes, it gives me a chance to do my meal planning for the week and I love being outside.

5. Make it fun.

Ok, just because starting a new habit can be challenging doesn’t mean that it has to be awful.

Try different things until you find something you like.

Or at least something that doesn’t suck.

Example: Starting to dread your walks? Try jumping rope,  lifting weights, or yoga. You’ll never know what you like until you try lots of different things. 

4. Be flexible:

If your dog dies on Tuesday, for the love of God, take Wednesday off. Snag the next opportunity you have to get back to your plan.

5. Give yourself a break:


So you missed two planned workout sessions.

Its not a big deal.

Get back in it as soon as you can and don’t waste time feeling bad about the past.

It’s not so much about sticking to a specific schedule 365 days a year as it is about including some sort of physical activity  on a regular basis.

Sometimes that means going for walks, working up to running a 5k, taking a kick-boxing class, or training to become a ninja.

It doesn’t matter what you do.

Just do something.

And do it regularly.

  1. I thing the “give yourself a break” is an important tip. Sometimes when you slip you tend to let it all go to crap instead of realizing it was just a small bump in the road. Get advice!
